Yes, this is my protest song. I have never been able to accept the idea of young people being sent to the front in the name of ideologies and other twisted causes created by leaders. I have never been able to understand how people can kill when, just a short time earlier, they were simply good young men — beloved children, young guys just beginning to fall in love — and then suddenly they are standing face to face with someone just like themselves, and one of them has to die.

That is why there is a line in the song: “I met him, he was just like me.” No one will ever convince me that the lives of those young people were sacrificed for something worth dying for. No cause is worth a beautiful young life. No life at all.

When I wrote this song, it was more about coming to terms with the past, because there was no war in my part of the world at the time. I wrote it almost as a tribute to those who had died in earlier wars. That is also why the cover shows a soldier who is not entirely modern. Even then, though, while I was writing it, shots were being fired somewhere far away and people were dying.

What is painful is that the song is still relevant, and every day it seems to speak more and more about what is happening now. I still cannot believe that we, as humanity, can continue to be this foolish — that we allow a handful of people to make decisions about our lives when, to them, our fate is not worth even a single petrodollar.
